The Transformation of Healthcare: AI in Diagnostic Imaging and the “AI DICOM LAB” Programme

Artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved by leaps and bounds in recent years, marking an unprecedented transformation in sectors such as healthcare. This technology has demonstrated its potential to improve diagnostic accuracy, speed up processes, and enhance research and development of new treatments. However, despite its enormous benefits, it also poses ethical and integration challenges that require careful and standardised implementation.

AI in Healthcare: Potential and Challenges Catalonia

AI has a positive impact on multiple areas of healthcare, such as early diagnosis, disease prognosis and drug development. It also optimises the management of clinical resources and patient monitoring, significantly improving their quality of life. However, the World Health Organisation warns of the risks of unregulated and unethical application of AI, which can range from incorrect data collection to the introduction of biases in algorithms. The lack of clear protocols and secure integration into the clinical workflow can jeopardise both patient safety and the effectiveness of the healthcare system.

Pioneering Region in AI in Healthcare

Catalonia is one of the pioneering autonomous communities in the development of AI-based tools for healthcare, which has driven the growth of technology companies seeking to bring these solutions into clinical practice. However, the introduction of AI tools in hospitals is being carried out individually and in isolation, without a systematic approach that allows for seamless integration. This limits their potential, as hospitals and healthcare systems cannot take full advantage of AI to benefit comprehensive patient care.

AI DICOM LAB: The Comprehensive Solution from Alma Medical Imaging

To respond to these challenges, Alma Medical Imaging has developed an innovative project: AI DICOM LAB, with the support of ACCIO under the Disruption 2023 grant. This programme focuses on the integration and monitoring of AI tools for diagnostic imaging in hospital workflows, ensuring the safe and effective application of technology in real clinical settings. The aim is not only to implement AI in hospitals, but also to offer a business model that encourages open innovation and collaboration between developers, healthcare centres and other stakeholders in the sector.

Benefits for the Healthcare Ecosystem

  1. For AI developers: access to real clinical environments and feedback collection that enables continuous improvement of their solutions.
  2. For hospitals: evidence-based resource management, optimised decision-making and the ability to assess the impact of AI on healthcare.
  3. For healthcare professionals: easy access to AI tools integrated into their workflow, enabling them to diagnose more accurately and efficiently.
  4. For patients: improved quality of healthcare through more accurate diagnoses and more detailed monitoring of their health status.
